Contemporary Aboriginal Art

My name is Chern'ee Sutton, I am 21 years old and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist and my heritage lies with the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland, Australia.

I started painting when I was 13 years old and I paint mostly on canvas using acrylic and raised acrylic paints. I am very passionate about my families' culture and history and wish to share this with the rest of the world.

I have designed the Indigenous markings and Indigenous story for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Mascot Borobi

My artwork and story was used on Borobi's paws, feet, surfboard, name and advertising signage and he will play a major part in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The story of Borobi’s Indigenous markings is below and to see a video of Borobi’s story click on the link below the pictures.

Borobi leaves my artwork and story of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in the sand behind him for the world to see.

I have met with Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their Royal visit to Australia in 2014 and given them one of my reconciliation paintings depicting a united Australia which now hangs in the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace. Another one of my paintings was commisioned by City of Gold Coast and was gifted to his Royal Highness, Charles Prince of Wales during his Royal Visit to Australia for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the painting now also hangs in the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace.

Another 3 of my paintings have also been used for the official licensed men’s and women’s Indigenous All Stars jerseys and merchandise for 2015, 2016 and 2017 by the NRL. I have also designed the new Mens Indigenous All Stars Logo, the new Womans Indigenous All Stars Logo as well as the Indigenous component of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup Logo.

I have also sold 4 paintings to Tennis Australia. Tennis Australia has proudly purchased the rights to use and reproduce my designs in association with its Indigenous tennis activities right around Australia. I have also had an exhibition at the 2014 Australian Open and was an artist in residence painting an installation art piece with several celebrities and tennis stars.

I have also designed the 2017 "Dreamtime at the G" AFL Guernsey for Essendon the Mighty Bombers.

I was an artist in residence for 14 days at the Athletes Village for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games where I created a 9 metre interactive art piece with dignataries, athletes and guests from around the world including His Royal Highness Charles Prince of Wales and His Royal Highness Prince Edward Earl of Wessex. I was also an artist in residence for two weeks at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast, I was commissioned by Dreamworld to paint 8 totem poles in the Dreamworld Corroboree display with the permission of the Kamilaroi elders and the Yugambeh language group.

I have 1 painting hanging in Queensland’s Parliament House on the Reconciliation level, 2 paintings hanging in the Queensland’s State Library, a painting hanging in the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs office and a painting hanging in the former Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurers office and have worked with several Government Departments across Queensland.

I also have my own chocolate range called "Chern'ee Sutton Originals" which is the first time Aboriginal art has been embossed onto the chocolate bars themselves.

I believe we are all created equal and should all be treated with the same respect that we wish for ourselves and families.

I love the feeling I get when I donate and can help those in need and I also think “Just imagine our world if everyone gave a little something”.
